Why Believe in a Higher Power?
People might ask (or not ask) why and how it is beneficial (and necessary) to believe in and have a relationship with God and to pursue spiritual growth. I have attempted to answer this question here in order to convince you with logical and practical reasons why having a higher power in your life is better than not.
- Why most people don't have a relationship with God or a spiritual life:
- They aren't sure what's out there and avoid thinking about the topic
- They don't want to be seen as a square or "bible hugger" and would be embarrassed if others thought they were praying or living with God.
- They think it would mean extra work, extra worries, extra obligations, and impractical religious ceremonies that just would add on to their never-ending to-do's and responsibilities
- They think they will be judged by God (and others) if they attempt to be "religious" or to know God
- They have seen how people have corrupted religions and abused the systems, and affiliate these religious blasphemies with believing in God
- They've met too many self-righteous, judgmental, weird-looking, and/or jargon-talking religions fanatics whom they can't relate to and don't want to be anything like
- There are so many religions out there who all claim to be RIGHT and have all the answers and to have the ONLY means to salvation. People don't want to pick any one practice because they know they will never be sure whether they are making the right choice, and they don't want to be wrong
- Their experience and surroundings have not shown them the real benefits of believing in God
I have avoided thinking about "God" and believing in "Him" for many years for ALL the above reasons. But now I am a believer for the below reasons, and want to share my newfound path to happiness and peace with others who have the same oppositions that I did.
Aren't these all things that everyone is looking for, especially happiness? So why would you not give God a chance to show you what he can do for you? You have NOTHING to lose! If you think there is something to lose, think it through, or even e-mail me and I BET that I will have a pretty good rebuttal to any opposition you can come up with! Try me!
Believing in God and praying to Him is something you can and should do for PERSONAL GAIN! Sounds absurd and blasphemous? Keep reading
By praying to God and believing in him, you will gain:
- Happiness
- Peace
- Satisfaction and fulfillment
- Freedom from anxiety, insecurity, and dependency on "worldly" addictions and illusions
- Answers to all your prayers, regardless of what you need or want*
*You may not always get exactly what you ask for, when you ask for it, but you will always get what you NEED!
My basic message: Praying and living with God as your Higher Power will make you happier, more at peace, will add meaning to your life, and will make your life more satisfying, will make you happy with yourself and free from many insecurity. You will have FREEDOM, HAPPINESS, PEACE, SECURITY, SATISFACTION, and MEANING.
I know that I have found the greatest, surest, most efficient source of happiness, peace, satisfaction, and joy in God. Notice how I don't use a lot of religious words and jargon because I am not trying to convince anyone to believe any creed or theology or religion. To me, all these things and places of worship are optional, and should be tailored to the individual: do whatever makes you happy. Some people want and need a religion and fellowship with others of the same practice, and if that's what makes you happy, by all means, seek it out! But I prefer to keep my faith (and my message) basic and simple: I don't want to limit myself to any one texts, any one creed, or any one place of worship. the only thing I am sure about is God and the need to pray to Him. Of course much of what I believe is based on what I've been exposed to in the bible and in the "Western" world, but there are many interpretations of God and of the old and new testaments in the Jewish and Christian faiths that I don't agree with and can't reconcile with although I've tried, so I prefer not to try to find all the answers and to know everything, I just live life and seek God's counsel.
Many believe that they should worship God to make God happy, for His/Her approval, to be "Good", and/or to make other people happy and proud. But I've come to believe the opposite. God doesn't need US, we need him, and should seek him out to BETTER OUR LIVES! This may sound selfish but I believe it's a win-win relationship. I can't say with any certainty what God gets out of it, but I know what I've gotten out of it and that's all I have to care about, because I can't pretend to know what God needs or wants. I just know what I want and need from him, and I believe he's happy to give it! I also believe that God programmed us to need him, so no matter how much we might resist coming to God, we are naturally better off with Him. This may sound like circular reasoning, but regardless of what you believe about this, the power and outcomes of prayer are undeniable. But you have to try it to experience it and believe it.
*When I say to "believing in God" and "having God in your life", I'm referring to these practices and habits:
- Praying to God for anything and everything that you need and want, whenever you want and feel like doing it
- Asking God for advice and using his counsel as often as you want or need it
- Believing that God or a higher power is the creator of everything on this earth and beyond, and that people are they way they are because he made us that way
- Believing that everything happens for a reason, and that there is something to be learned and sometimes even gained from misfortunes and bad outcomes because God is always trying to give us what we need
- Having faith in God to give us what we need and trusting Him to help us in situations that we don't have any control over and that are stressful/dangerous/uncertain to us
